Facing Premature Menopause- Coping with Early Menopause

Menopause happens to thousands of women everyday and it is a reality that every woman needs to face when they reached the menopausal age which is usually on their 50s. Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation. A woman has reached menopause when she has not had a menstrual period in 12 months in a row.  But there are cases that menopause happens prematurely before the age of 40.  Facing premature menopause can be hard to most women.

Before the age of 40, most people are already stable with their careers, have financial freedom and they have more time to enjoy life because they no longer babysit their children. But facing premature menopause is something most women are not prepared at an early age.  Although it is a girl thing, not all women are comfortable talking about early menopause to their girl friends and for this reason, women facing premature menopause go through this problem feeling depressed and alone.

There are many causes for early cessation of menstrual period.  Some of the causes are surgical removal of both ovaries, surgical removal of uterus, treatments for cancer like chemotherapy and genetics or early menopause runs in your family.

So what can you do when you are facing premature menopause?

Educate yourself about your condition.  It is best to consult your doctor to understand what you are going through. Getting all the necessary facts and information can be very helpful for you to know what you are dealing with.

Counselling.  Change is not always easy to accept. Therapies and counselling can be very helpful for women to embrace the changes that cannot be avoided like menopause. You can still have a happy and fulfilling life even though your reproductive system is no longer functioning normally. Life is too short to be miserable and at some point you need to stop punishing yourself and feeling depressed on something that you cannot control. Cognitive behavioral therapy maybe recommended by your doctor.

Support groups. You are not alone. Thousands of women have the same problem. There are reports that more and more women today are facing premature menopause.  Hearing stories on how they are coping with the unexpected cessation of their menstrual cycle can be a great relief and you will also get some tips that might work for you.

The hardest part of facing premature menopause is facing its symptoms. Common symptoms of early menopause are mood swing, hot flashes, gaining weight, decreased sex drive, sleep disorder, urinary tract infections and vaginal dryness which will make you prone to vaginal infections. Menopause women are also more prone to osteoporosis due to lower estrogen levels.

Hormonal replacement therapy HRT is a common treatment to relieve the common symptoms of menopause. Although HRT has its benefits, it also has its risks especially when administered for a long period of time. Not all women who are on their menopause stage are qualified for HRT treatment. Talk to your doctor about this with regards to your medical history.

There are also natural treatments to help relieve the disturbing symptoms of menopause. In facing premature menopause symptoms, some women turn to herbal medicines.  Acupressure is also another method to help menopause women deal with their symptoms.
